Adelaide Desalination Plant Doubles

7 July 2009

Representatives from AdelaideAqua and SA Water will today formalise the agreement to double the capacity of the Adelaide Desalination Plant at a signing ceremony in Sydney. This expansion means that the completed plant, to be powered by renewable energy, will deliver half of Adelaide’s water supply and makes it the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.

The signing ceremony coincides with the official visit to Australia of H.M. King Juan Carlos I of Spain and will bring together key members of the AdelaideAqua consortium, SA Water and senior representatives of the Spanish and Australian Federal Governments.

The expansion of the Adelaide desalination plant is news welcomed by AdelaideAqua, the consortium that is to design, build, operate and maintain the facility at Port Stanvac. Speaking from ceremony today, Project Director Jim Frith said that “this expansion is a welcome opportunity and certainly one that AdelaideAqua is committed to assisting South Australia to realise”.

“Increasing the capacity of the plant from 50GL to 100GL will not threaten our commitment to South Australia to deliver ‘First Water’ in December 2010 and it will not compromise our commitment to excellent environmental outcomes,” Mr Frith said. “We have a robust program of works and our initial planning and design allowed for a potential increase in plant size. The design of the intake and outfall tunnels and pump stations are already sized to the larger capacity”.
