United Utilities Australia preferred water service provider for Gracetown

June 2008

Creation of Australia’s first sustainable recycled black water system is a step closer with LandCorp naming United Utilities Australia as the preferred water service provider to build, operate and manage the proposed wind powered water recycling system at Gracetown.

This is a significant project for WA and LandCorp was encouraged by a high level of interest in the project from local, east coast and international private sector companies.

United Utilities Australia operates water supply and wastewater treatment plants across Australia, and is a subsidiary of UK-based United Utilities who also have significant international experience in the provision of recycled water systems.

Once operational, the treatment plant at Gracetown will deliver Class A+ quality recycled black water directly into homes for non-drinking purposes including toilet flushing and cold water washing machine use.

Importantly, this system will be made available to existing homes in the town, as well as the proposed 140-home residential subdivision and tourist development, and will enable the decommissioning of septic tanks in existing homes which is essential to improve groundwater quality over time.

LandCorp will now work with United Utilities Australia to design the recycled water infrastructure before seeking a water license from the Economic Regulatory Authority (ERA). Subject to approvals, construction is expected to start in August 2009 and the system should be fully operational by March 2010.

Plans for the town’s eco-tourism development are also being progressed with the identification of a suitable site west of the town, adjacent to Salter Street and bordering Bayview Drive and Langley Crescent.

The proposed area allows for a 50-key facility which could potentially include self contained chalets and lodge accommodation. The development will encompass and enhance Gracetown’s existing oval and community facilities.

Four potential sites were investigated for the eco-tourism site, with the proposed area offering the best opportunity for a development which would be both profitable and sustainable into the future.

The project will add to the diversity of tourism accommodation available at Gracetown, and will be subject to the same sustainability principles as the residential development.
