United Utilities - Transfield Services sign LinkWater Operations and Maintenance Contract

16th April 2008

A new water system to provide drought relief through the transfer of bulk water across south east Queensland is a step close following LinkWater’s signing of an alliance agreement with United Utilities Australia and Transfield Services.

LinkWater is the statutory authority responsible for the bulk transfer of potable water throughout the south east.

The operations and maintenance contract is worth a minimum of $50 million over five years to the Alliance.

Under the alliance agreement, United Utilities and Transfield Services will assist LinkWater to operate and maintain new water grid pipeline assets currently under construction, along with more than 200km of existing mains and associated works such as pumping stations and potable water reserves.

Once completed, the system will provide security from drought by making possible the transfer of water throughout the region. Most of the new water grid pipelines will be able to carry water in either direction.

Treated water from the Gold Coast’s new desalination plant can also be fed into the system for distribution to Brisbane and beyond.

“This project gives us a firm base from which we can expand our water business in Queensland which is a dynamic growth area,” said Kevin Starling, Managing Director of United Utilities.

United Utilities recently opened an office within Brisbane’s central business district at 300 Queen Street.
