United Utilities Australia, in association with South Australia’s government water utility SA Water, has won the 2006 South Australian Engineering Excellence Award with the Victor Harbor Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Project.
This highly prestigious award is presented annually by the SA chapter of Engineers Australia, the peak body representing the country’s engineering professionals.
Through a Build Own Operate Transfer contract with SA Water, UUA financed and constructed a state of the art sewage treatment facility for Victor Harbor, a coastal holiday resort south of Adelaide. The new plant provides reuse water to better than Class A, making it suitable for unrestricted irrigation of crops, playing fields and Council parklands.
To meet SA Water’s stringent performance criteria, UUA selected an immersed membrane bioreactor process (IMB) utilitising Kubota flat sheet membrane technology for the 5.1ML/d plant.
Commissioned towards the end of last year, this was the second IMB using this type of membrane to be constructed in Australia, with the first being little more than pilot plant scale.
Nitrogen in the treated water is less than 5.0mg /L total N while the phosphorous target being achieved is less than 0.05mg / L total P. This is the lowest phosphorous target yet attempted in Australia and is extremely low by world standards.
In their nomination critique, the judges said the project demonstrated construction and delivery of a high standard. Performance trials and subsequent operations confirmed that the design objectives had been achieved or exceeded.
The project initially won in the Environmental category before taking out the overall award.
At the National Engineering Excellence Award finals in Canberra later this year, UUA’s nomination will be judged against winners from other Engineers Australia regional chapters.
