SA Water has entered into a contract with United Utilities Australia which will finance, design, construct and operate for 20 years, a new wastewater treatment plant for the town of Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide.
Project capital cost, including land acquisition and other costs met by SA Water, is approximately $40 million. The new plant will be at the forefront in Australia for the application of immersed membrane bioreactor technology in municipal wastewater treatment. This technology can remove micro-organisms down to the size of viruses and Phosphorus discharge will be reduced by 99% compared with the discharge from the existing plant, which was commissioned in 1972.
To meet community expectations, the new plant will be situated in a secluded area 10km from the existing plant around which major new residential and recreational developments are now proposed. The scheme is designed to facilitate reuse of a significant proportion of high quality Class A treated wastewater, suitable for unrestricted irrigation of agriculture, parks and gardens.
Construction of the treatment plant will take about 13 months and it is planned to be operational around the middle of 2005. Victor Harbor is one of South Australia’s most popular holiday and tourist destinations and this new plant will enable further growth and development.
